Nerf Rival line hits the Web

Yesterday morning news broke about an amazing new line of Nerf blasters set to be officially unveiled this weekend at New York ToyFair! Nerf Rival is aiming at becoming a line that takes a chunk out of the paintball and airsoft market for people 14 years-old and up.

The Ammo

The rounds are something entirely new. Scratch that. Not entirely new. The rounds are basically Ballistic Balls, slightly reduced in size (to 1″ in diameter) and dimpled for stability. That is a novel approach to a new round. They’ve taken what works from the good old ballistic ball (The first Nerf Ammo type) and crossed it with what already works extremely well in golf balls.

Personally, I have been looking forward to the ballistic ball coming back for a long time. I thought that it would be in the form of a blaster with a grenade launcher, but that role was taken by the Elite Missile. I’m glad it became an ammo that it has in this new line, because I think that with what they have designed here is going to be something big in terms of capability. It’s going to be an ammunition that can be launched accurately and quickly, and that’s what Nerf needs. Not that the classic dart has anything wrong with it, they are just not particularly accurate.

The Blasters

From what we’ve seen in this video (at the 2:10 mark), the larger blaster (Zeus) is a flywheel-powered blaster. This is what allows it to launch the rounds at up to 70 miles per hour (1/3 the speed of an average paintball). Without the weight of the rounds themselves, you can’t really perform the calculations necessary to determine the distances they will be able to achieve. I’m sure that’ll be something they talk about this weekend, as it’s easier to tell a parent it’ll go 80 feet than 80 miles per hour (it just sounds less scary).

NERF RIVAL ZEUS MXV-1200 Blaster & Mask_lifestyle

Many of those who play paintball and airsoft (not all though) look down on those of us who play solely with Nerf blasters whether we modify or not. It’s my hope (and more than likely Hasbro’s) that Rival will bridge the gap between those competitive sports and the fun we have in Nerf battles. It’s always great to see more people get in to this hobby.

We’re very excited for these, as we’ve always been hopeful that Nerf will become a more serious competitive sport in the future as well as the fun anytime activity that it’s always been. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for any more information that comes about. Our friend Vas over at FoamFromAbove will be there covering everything he can in relation to blasters and a few other select toys. Check back here for updates and our opinion of what’s revealed!

DudePerfect’s #NerfPerfect Challenge

Some news from Nerf Nation! Starting this month, Nerf and Dude Perfect are coming up with challenges to all of Nerf Nation to create #NerfPerfect shots with their blasters. From what it sounds, they’re looking for awesome stunts done with blasters in a similar style to what Dude Perfect has already come up with. This is the perfect chance to show Nerf what you’re made of and how skilled you are with a blaster (just a suggestion: Vortex blasters are perfect for trick shots because of the ricochet).

This month (February), the challenge is to use any blaster in their Nerf collection to make a #NerfPerfect shot. You can post your video on Facebook, YouTube, or Instagram using the tag #NerfPerfect and some could even be chosen as Dude Perfect’s #NerfMVP!

The announcement for the challenge is above, and check out Nerf’s YouTube channel for Dude Perfect’s Nerf Perfect videos for inspiration:

Blaster Labs – Save Vortex Petition

BlasterLabs has started a petition to ask Hasbro to continue development of the Vortex line of blasters. They are taking the current lack of offerings (only the Fusefire, Ripshot, and Ricochet are being actively sold by Hasbro) as proof that Hasbro isn’t interested in creating any more substantial blasters that use Vortex Discs.

Personally, we don’t believe that the Vortex is going away. We believe that Hasbro has shifted focus from Vortex to Zombie Strike and Mega while they take the time to come up with some solid designs and features for the future of the Vortex line (or just future Vortex Zombie Strike Blasters).

However, letting Hasbro know that we support them in future additions to the Vortex line is a great idea, so we’ll be signing the petition to let them know that we want more Vortex blasters.

Nerf Zombie Strike Doominator

Looks like another blaster has dropped on to the Nerf scene, this time the Nerdist has got the scoop on this one. The Doominator is a Zombie Strike blaster slated to come out this fall for $39.99. According to the article, it’ll be available at most major retailers as well as

This beast of a blaster looks like another bastard-child blaster, this time the result of some sordid relationship between the FlipFury and SlingFire. If you’ve taken a look at the article, they say that:

The action lever also provides a quick reset for the next dart, a la the excellently designed SlingFire rifle.

However, we don’t believe that this is the case (they don’t provide the marketing blurb in the article, so we’re just going on appearances and logic). If you’ve gotten your hands on the FlipFury, you’ll know that the secondary trigger simply activates the mechanism to rotate the cylinders around. We believe that the two-fingered lever here performs the same function. We think that the fore-grip is actually what primes the blaster and advances the individual cylinder to the next dart. We’ve emailed our contact at Nerf in hopes of more information on this blaster, and will update this article accordingly.

 Update 02/10/15:

(Ages 8 years & up/Approx. Retail Price: $39.99 /Available: Fall 2015)

Capacity is key when it comes to fighting zombies, and the ZOMBIE STRIKE DOOMINATOR blaster delivers the highest capacity of a ZOMBIE STRIKE blaster yet. With an unprecedented four revolving dart drums and a total capacity of 24 ZOMBIE STRIKE darts, the DOOMINATOR blaster is crucial to players in their fight against the undead. Available at most major retailers and

Nerf Mega Rotofury

We have some awesome news to share with you! Presenting the Nerf Mega Rotofury! This blaster looks like the bastard child of a Vortex Revonix and an Elite Rampage, and we’re not at all mad about that. We’ve been waiting since the news first broke about the Mega line for something like this. Unfortunately it looks as though we’ll have to wait a little bit longer, as it’s supposed to hit shelves this fall (but we think it’ll probably come out late summer). Check out the blurb below for more information:
